Laser Tattoo Removal: What Actually Happens?
Thinking about getting a tattoo removed but have no idea what the process is actually like?
Don’t worry — it’s pretty simple.
At ZAPPIT, we keep the process straightforward, explain everything before we start, and make sure you know what to expect.
1. We have a look at your tattoo
First, we check out the tattoo and talk about what you want to achieve.
We look at things like the size, colours, age and location of the tattoo. This helps us work out the best approach for your treatment.
You can also send us a photo first and get a quick quote.
2. We prepare the skin
Before treatment, we clean the area and get everything ready.
You’ll be given the right eye protection, and we’ll explain what’s going to happen before we start.
3. The laser breaks up the ink
This is the clever part.
The laser sends very short pulses of energy into the tattoo. The energy targets the tattoo ink and breaks it into tiny particles.
Your body then slowly gets rid of those particles naturally.
That’s why tattoo removal takes time — the laser does its part, then your body does the rest.
4. The tattoo slowly fades
You normally won’t see the tattoo disappear straight away.
After each treatment, the tattoo gradually becomes lighter as your body clears away more of the ink.
Some tattoos fade quickly. Others take more sessions.
It depends on the tattoo, the ink, your skin and how your body responds.
5. We leave time between treatments
Your skin needs time to recover and your body needs time to clear the broken-down ink.
That means treatments are spaced out rather than being done every few days.
Patience is a big part of tattoo removal.
Does tattoo removal hurt?
Everyone is different, but most people describe the laser as a quick snapping or rubber-band-like feeling.
The treatment itself is usually quite fast, especially for smaller tattoos.
We’ll talk you through it and make sure you’re comfortable before we get started.
The most important thing to remember
Tattoo removal isn't an overnight process.
You’re basically giving your body time to gradually clear the ink.
Some tattoos can be surprisingly stubborn, while others fade really well. There’s no way to guarantee exactly how many sessions someone will need before seeing the tattoo.
